Guardian

Last week I spent some time with guys from the guardian, working on their information graphics. I had a great week there and was lucky enough to help on a double spread graphic on the BP Oil Disaster. My contribution was drawing up the diagram and the various parts of the process that BP were carrying out to stop the Oil Spill.

Derelict

Recently completed project based around dereliction, in particularly an old brick manufacturer which had been closed down for a number of years.

I chose the topic of dereliction because I wanted to practice my skills in photography and also being such an unusual building, I didn't want to visually describe the stereotypical message of the building decomposing. Instead I wanted to show how these areas can be seen as something exciting.

To achieve this I decided to produce a brochure style book for Urban Derelict Project, where it would show the viewer many different viewpoints of the same building and advertise the appeal of these types of buildings. The different viewpoints I chose were a Teenager, a Historian, a Developer and finally a Naturalist. I also wanted to communicate the fact that dereliction should not be feared, but instead explored; and for that reason I chose to incorporate mechanisms into the book, which allowed the viewer to interact with the pages.

The headlines for the pages were all screen washed, giving a very rustic effect; like that of a bricks. Brochure bound using inter screws.

Ikea

D&AD Brief promoting the new 2011 Ikea catalogue, worked on in collaboration with Aaron Alexander

Concept was to focus on how Ikea can be used to personalise your room:

"Make A Home Your Own"

Inspiration for the idea came from holiday polaroid photos, where some friends were holding up photos in other areas of the world. Derived from this was the idea for people to tear-out pages from the Ikea catalogue, which would enable them to hold up multiple Ikea products and effectively design their room in front of them.

The advert shown below allows people to relate to the idea of holding products up and visualising their room in front of them, while the viral advert, also shown below as photographic storyboard; adds the cheeky nature of Ikea to the campaign.

Technology Ring

Brief set by 'the chase' design company, which was entitled:

"Two Side to the story"

Concept was to use infographics as a means of plotting the history of technologic inventions and how technology has taken over society today. The 'two sides' being the the positive effect of the invention at the time it was invent and the negative effect of it in terms of society today. Its large format was designed so that you can see how full of technology life is today and how simple it once was. The quote that the project is based on was by Ervin Laszlo:

Make Museums Sexy

Project complete and submitted for the MPA Roses Student Awards 2010. Collaborative brief worked on with Stuart Talbot, check out his blog at www.stuarttalbotillustration.blogspot.com.

Task to 'Make Museums Sexy'. The concept for the promotion of museums was to use the five senses of the body, 'Stimulate Your Senses'; in order to make museums appealing to the public. Focusing on less well-known museums in the UK, each artifact from a chosen museum represents one of the senses. The artifacts have been photograph in order to attract the viewer to the campaign and are accompanied by seductive typography to indicated why people should visit a museum.

Scale Poster

Here is the final piece for the Scale project I started last year.

"Measurement Is Vital For The Existence Of Scale"

The organs that I posted before have been placed into the human body and the diagram has been filled in around them. The final print is A0, however I have only been able to add a small image of it below. It would have looked wicked larger though. The body is displayed in the vernacular of an Architectural drawing, complete with Key, Scales & Information Bar. The organs have not really changed that much since i last posted them, however there are some closer images of the drawing too, which makes it easier to see the level of detail. Enjoy!!!

I find them really interesting to look at and hard to believe what the objects actually are. You find yourself doubting whether they are real or not.

Derelict

The other day I went a took some photos at a derelict asylum in Northampton. It was part of some research that I'm doing for a project based on 'Urban Dereliction'. Although it was really quite freaky walking round the buildings and the fact that my heart was beating at twice the rate it would do usually; I did get some quite nice photos. Here are some of the shots that I took.

There was a basement downstairs in one of the buildings, but stupidly I left the torch in the car and just by looking down the stairs, it was pitch black from about the 3rd step! So I opted out for this visit, but gonna go down there next time.

Scale

"Measurement Is Fundamental For Scale'

In order to communicate this I am using the image of the human body and the organs within. By linking one of the six architectural units of measure to one of the vital organs of the body; it communicates the fact that one can not live without the other. Each building that represents an organ will then include specific architectural symbols that support each unit of measure. Below are the single drawings of the organs, which will eventually become part of a full body diagram. The organs will be 'to scale' and in their rightful positions in the body; and I will also be filling in the rest of the human body shape to support the concept. The overall visual will take the visual nature of an architectural plan. More finalized photos to come.

Self Promotion

I recently completed a project promoting myself as a designer and experimented with how I wanted myself to be advertised in the graphics industry. The idea was to produce a 3D blueprint to communicate me as being an organised and particular person. The blueprint was then printed on thin paper, rolled up and packaged in a small tube for postage. I replicated this style on to my stationery, which included my business card, compliment slip, letterhead etc.

I am continually updating the blueprint in this project, adding more and more to the designers desk. I am also going to be producing some still-life photographs of the blue objects, which I will add up here to. More pictures on the way of the blueprint and its development.

Lomography Society Internationale

Annual Report based on the photographic style of Lomography. This style includes unstructured snapshot photography, imperfect imagery, blurring, colour flashes and the Lomo fisheye. I wanted to communicate all aspects of this photographic style within the publication, whereby each page is based around a different characteristic of their approach.

The pie charts included in the annual report I made out of all the photos that had taken when experimenting with Lomography. All the photos are duo toned different colours, and when I put the pie charts together, each colour represented a different percentage of the circle and therefore a different value.

Step by Step guide on how to peel a banana. Each step illustrated and described on a single icon, based on the logo and identity of a popular banana brand 'Chiquita'. Steps are displayed together on a hand-out sheet to show people the perfect way to peel your banana.

Phobia

Molysomophobia

The phobia of dirt, contamination and infection. Letterforms and Editorial Spreads created based on this type of phobia. Their purpose to reflect the nature of the subject by the means of photography and its physical appearance.

Can't tell you enough how disgusting the letterforms were to produce, searching around for grime, dirt, mould etc is not my favourite past time! Its surprising too where you find things when your not look for them. My attempt to rapidly grow mould in cups and other items, meant the house had some pretty foul sights in it for weeks!
